Coarse language 

Severity: mild to strong

  • Mild coarse language: one or more characters might use expletives that are in common use.

  • Coarse language: more than one character uses expletives that are in common use but widely considered offensive.

  • Strong coarse language: more than once character uses expletives that are highly offensive.

Frequency: occasional to frequent

  • Occasional coarse language: one or more characters might use one or two expletives throughout the course of the show.

  • Frequent coarse language: more than one character uses expletives in their regular speech.

Violence, injury and death

Suicide

  • Mention: a character simply states that a person has died by suicide.

  • Discussion: one or more characters talks about the detail of death by suicide. This may include details of how the death by suicide happened, or the character’s own plans for suicide.

  • Depiction: a character dies by suicide, on stage, in the course of the play.

Death

  • Mention: a character states that a person has died or is dead.

  • Discussion: one or more characters talks about the detail of a death that has happened or that might happen. This may include details of how the death happened.

  • Depiction: a character dies on stage, in the course of the play.

Violence

  • Mention: a character states that violence has occurred.

  • Discussion: one or more characters discuss a violent incident or incidences. This may include details of the violence.

  • Depiction: one or more characters enact violence on stage, in the course of the play.

Sex and sexual references

Sexual activity

  • Mention (sexual references): one or more characters will state that they have engaged in sexual activity.

  • Discussion: one or more characters will discuss their sexual activity in detail.

  • Depiction: one or more characters will engage in sexual activity on stage, in the course of the play.

Slurs and shaming

Slurs, -isms and marginalising

Where possible, we will name the specific -ism or marginalisation.

  • Mention: a character might tell another character that they experienced a slur, -ism or marginalisation. They will not go into detail.

  • Discussion: one or more characters discuss, in detail, their own or other people’s experience of a slur, -ism or marginalisation.

  • Depiction or use of: one or more character uses a slur or acts on a prejudice. This may be directed at another character on stage.

Shaming

  • Mention: one or more characters might tell of their experience of shaming.

  • Discussion: one or more characters will discuss, in detail, their experience of shaming others or being shamed.

  • Depiction or use of: one or more characters will shame another character on stage.

Mental illness, disability, neurodivergence and personality disorders

Anxiety and depression

  • Mention: a character might tell another character that they experience anxiety or depression.

  • Discussion: one or more characters might discuss, in detail, their experience of anxiety or depression or the experience of others. This may include the specifics signs or symptoms of their illness.

  • Depiction: one or more characters will display signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression.
